A Prayer for the Right Kind of Prayer
FATHER, we have not because we ask not. But then you’ve also said we have not because we ask with selfish motives (James 4:3). Lord, how do we take the “self” out of our prayers? How do we pray in such a way as to reflect your heart and your mind; your will and your word? Teach us to avoid the presumption of barging into the Holy of Holies blurting our schemes and dreams without regard for your sovereign purposes. May we learn to come near to listen rather than to be quick with our mouths, hasty in our hearts; uttering foolish things. Keep us mindful, sovereign Lord, that you are in heaven; and we… we are on earth, so let the words of our prayers be honoring and glorifying to you (Eccl. 5:1-2).
